Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I’m ready for therapy?

If you know there is something about your day to day that you want to be different- even if it’s the way you feel- and you haven’t been able to figure out how to do that on your own, that’s when therapy can help. Working on how to change behavior, thought patterns, or coping with anxiety better are all things that people address in therapy.

Usually I can handle my problems on my own. Why do I need therapy?

Universal truth- we all need help sometimes. We can’t go through life successfully without at least some help sometimes. Therapists are trained and have experience with helping clients figuring out the source of problems, processing those, and how to make changes or feel better about what they are going through. It’s really hard to see ourselves from the outside and objectively. That’s where therapy comes in handy.

What are therapy sessions like?

Therapy sessions are typically just under an hour long. At the beginning it involves the therapist and client getting to know each other, and figuring out what your goals for therapy would be (i.e. decrease anxiety, decrease conflict, overcome burnout, etc.). Sessions can then involve talking through how to address those issues- both the source of the issue and how it presents in your day to day life.

Therapy is *kind of* expensive. Why should I spend the money on it?

It can be REALLY hard to spend money on taking care of ourselves. We usually can spend money on loved ones and on tangible bills easily. Therapy is an investment in helping yourself be the best version of you that you can be, a better partner or even friend to those around you. It can take you from just surviving to enjoying life. Life is too short not to take care of ourselves.

What will I get out of therapy?

People typically get a deeper understanding of yourself and/or your partner’s feelings, thoughts, and desires.  People also learn how to deal/cope with what you struggle with better- whether that’s thought patterns, communication, coping skills, etc.  People usually report a sense of relief by being able to share with an unbiased, third party, who understands and cares about what they’re going through.
